Copyright

Photocopying and generating computer printouts (either by Library staff or by Members) is subject to the provisions of copyright legislation (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and associated Statutory Instruments). It is the Members' responsibility to ensure that they operate within the terms of copyright legislation.

To comply with these regulations copies made will incur a copyright charge unless they are for judicial proceedings, are outwith copyright or permission has been obtained from the rights holder. Copying is also permitted under "fair dealing" for material which is to be used for private research or non-commercial purposes. To carry out photocopying on behalf of Members for which a copyright fee is not charged a completed Copyright Declaration Form must be faxed, posted or delivered to the Library, signed by the person intending to use the copy.
(The form is a pdf file) .

To facilitate copying of material not covered by the above exceptions the Library, at present, operates a Copyright Licensing Agency Sticker Scheme. The cost of each CLA sticker is £9.00 (per case report / article /chapter of a book) and is passed on directly to the CLA. The Library's administration charges will remain the same irrespective of whether a copyright clearance sticker is required or not.

In summary - to be able to photocopy material for Members Library staff must either have a signed completed Copyright Declaration Form, a request for a CLA sticker or the material to be copied is clearly outwith copyright (e.g. case reports over 70 years old). Material will be assumed to be in copyright unless it can be satisfactorily established otherwise.
