Derek Morrow

What differentiates me from other applicants is my hunger. I have willingly taken on extra pressure in order to follow my dreams- I gave up a promising career within one of the world’s leading blood diagnostic laboratories, have completely changed careers and have put myself significant pressure. Fortunately, as a result of this experience, I am filled with drive and ambition and when someone gives me the opportunity to prove myself, they would be rewarded with one of the most hard-working and loyal trainees that they have ever met.
I was inspired to enter the legal profession by the character Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. When all other people were losing their heads this character was full of dignity and honour and believed that justice would, in the end, prevail. He was a respected man and, like me, making money from his profession was not his first concern and instead strived to help those in need. During the Professional diploma in Legal Practice I have found myself drawn to the areas of Private client and Civil litigation where I believe I would gain a lot of client contact and I feel that these areas (and those similar to them) are where I would be able to flourish most.

I am a dedicated and hardworking individual who has excellent time keeping. As I have worked at least 20 hours per week during my Degree I have learned to prioritise workloads and become very organised. As a result I always meet my deadlines. I am a confident, friendly and approachable person with excellent communication skills which I think is vital to becoming a successful solicitor.
My aim is to become a successful solicitor in criminal law. This is mostly due to the fact I thoroughly enjoyed the module during the Diploma and my work experience with Beltrami and Company. The skills used by a criminal lawyer are similar to those that are needed in my part time work in sales and marketing. I have to be persuasive, confident, persistent and able to think on my feet.
I am interested in a traineeship beginning as soon as possible within any legal sector. I would also be interested in training with two different firms to fulfill my traineeship.

After obtaining a degree in Anatomical Science and working in a science environment for two years I decided to undertake further education in Law. This involved escaping from my comfort zone of being in a familiar environment, however, I believe that I have adapted well and have successfully completed my degree, with Merit. Since 2008 I have had the opportunity of work experience at Aamer Anwar & Co which has encouraged me to pursue a career in Law. After studying my Law degree and Diploma in Legal Practice I have gained interest in many areas such as Criminal Law, Human Rights and Civil Litigation.
As both degrees contained a large amount of problem solving I am capable of researching solutions to determine the best outcome. I also believe that my oral and written skills are of a high standard through preparing presentations and report writing. Accuracy and attention to detail have been important aspects during my degrees and employment to ensure a high standard of work. I am capable of working on my own and also function very well as part of a team, which has been essential in all of my previous roles.

I completed my LLB Part-time at Strathclyde in 2010 with Merit or Distinction in two thirds of the syllabus and have just completed my DipLP at Strathclyde with a further three Certs of Merit (in Criminal Advocacy, Practice Management and a Best in Law School performance in the Personal Injury Project) in addition to having represented the University at their inaugural participation in the International Negotiation Competition. I also have a degree in Risk Management from Glasgow Caledonian and am a Member of the Institute of Risk Management.
I have extensive experience of personal injury claims and claims management and although I continue in my current role as senior claims personnel for a major UK insurer, I am looking for new challenges and to complete my qualification as a solicitor with a traineeship commencing ideally in 2011 or later as opportunities arise. I have no preference as to practice area although my previous experience has obvious applications.
I also have flexibility in location for the right opportunity.

Lorraine Lapsley

I am seeking a summer placement within a criminal law and human rights environment with a view to securing a traineeship commencing in 2012. I am currently undertaking honours year of the LLB, having initially began the accelerated LLB programme, following receipt of a BA Law degree from Napier University, Edinburgh. Throughout both my law degrees I have studied a wide variety of subjects which have given me a sound understanding of both law and societal issues. I am ambitious, friendly and highly organised with strong analytical skills.
My enthusiasm for both law and empowering individuals was confirmed through my experience as a student advisor within the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic both as a representative of individuals in actual cases and through my involvement with the Prisons Project which aims to decrease re-offending rates by giving youth offenders the knowledge to make informed choices. Both roles have given me a unique insight into the challenging and high pressure role of representing members of the public. During this role I am able to use the effective communication and strong interpersonal skills I have developed in my previous work experience, particularly my role as a training officer and supervisor of a busy public house.
