Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow

Bicentenary of the Royal Faculty library (1817-2017)

library

At 200 years old the library is one of the oldest in Scotland and has been a key feature of the Royal Faculty for all this time. A law library for the Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow was first proposed in 1736 but it was not formally established until 27 February 1817. It began its life in the Lyceum Sale Rooms in Nelson Street with the library already containing 800 books, including Baillie’s Library and other bequests. Between 1817 and 1857 the Faculty Library moved a further couple of times until the Faculty Halls were built at St. George’s Place (later renamed Nelson Mandela Place).

Today the library is rightly viewed as the jewel in the crown of the Royal Faculty - providing members with access to a comprehensive law library. It now contains over a kilometre of shelving of legal textbooks, case reports and journals, which are continually updated, with every Scots law publication taken as well as a wide range of UK and European publications and also access to a number of electronic databases.

As the Royal Faculty’s Triennial Dinner takes place almost on the exact date of the library’s bicentenary it is being used to celebrate this milestone in the life of the Royal Faculty. A number of other events have also been planned during the course of the year; including - an inter-firm quiz, a concert in the library, an Initial Advice Centre pro bono event and a civic reception at the City Chambers. Further details of all these events will be published in due course.
