5. Supporting Transgender Clients
Date:
Thursday 15 February 2018
Time:
05:45pm - 07:15pm
Speaker:
James Morton (Manager, Scottish Transgender Alliance)
Seminar Details:

Transgender is an umbrella term which encompasses many diverse people with intricate identities, bodies and gender presentations. Terminology best practice is rapidly changing and as a result, some lawyers worry about saying or doing the wrong thing when supporting transgender clients. The numbers of people transitioning has increased significantly creating a corresponding rise in complex transgender legal dilemmas across all areas of the law. James Morton will use illustrative examples to explore current terminology and demonstrate where lawyers should adopt appropriate sensitivity to the needs of their transgender clients. He will also highlight the latest key UK and international transgender case law. The seminar will be of relevance to all areas of law.

James Morton is the Manager of the Scottish Transgender Alliance. This is a project housed within the Edinburgh based Equality Network. He regularly advises Scottish Government, the NHS and other Public bodes about transgender equality and has participated in Council of Europe transgender strategic litigation training.
