13. Personal Injury Conference

Seminar Details:

As lawyers in the sector will know, developments in the law, procedure and practice of personal injury claims continue at breakneck (without the whiplash) speed. The Royal Faculty's 8th annual PI conference will cover all of the current issues and look forward to further changes. The conference will be chaired by Charles Hennessy and will provide 5.5 hours CPD time. The principal speaker will be Sheriff Kenneth J. McGowan of the All Scotland Sheriff Personal Injury Court and other speakers will be practitioners or other specialists in personal injury work.

The speakers and their topics will be –

The All-Scotland PI Court: Substantive and Procedural Developments – Sheriff Kenneth J. McGowan

Review of last year’s important PI cases from Scotland and elsewhere – Charles Hennessy

Complex PI cases and how to manage them – Lauren Sutherland QC

Disease Litigation – a Miscellany a talk including the Supreme Court decision of Dryden & Others v Johnson Matthey plc and what constitutes an ‘injury’; the Inner House decision of Docherty on Applicable law in cross-border long-tail disease claims; and two ‘low exposure’ Court of Session asbestos cases which considered the interpretation and application of the Factories Acts. – Laura Blane (Partner, Thompson’s Solicitors)

What you ought to know about expenses in PI cases – Mark Traynor (Director, Alex Quinn & Partners)

Some challenges in PI litigation – Gillian Rushbury (Partner, BLM)
