An acknowledged expert on children’s hearings, Sheriff Miller will chart the origins and history of the system in order to examine its current state and potential future development.

Alan D Miller is a Sheriff in Glasgow, where he deals particularly with family and children’s referral cases. He also convenes mental health tribunals in restricted patient cases. From 2005 to 2010 he was a part-time Sheriff, convenor of mental health and additional support needs tribunals, and youth justice consultant. In that capacity he helped the States of Guernsey set up a system modelled on the children’s hearings. He previously worked as a children’s panel reporter for 20 years, including 5 years in Glasgow, 5 years as Regional Reporter for Dumfries and Galloway and 10 years as the first Principal Children’s Reporter.
