About the Speaker: Judge Stuart Buchanan

Stuart Buchanan is a Judge of the First-tier Tribunal appointed to the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC) sitting in Glasgow. He was formerly a solicitor in private practice, having qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1984. He worked in Glasgow as a solicitor with a general civil practice until 2000. In 2001, he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates. He practised as an advocate, again with a general civil practice, from 2001 to 2018 (appearing twice in The Supreme Court of the UK). He was a part-time tutor and then part-time lecturer in the Diploma at University of Strathclyde in the late 90s/early 2000s. He was first appointed a part-time adjudicator in the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal in 2002 sitting part-time in Leeds, and then in North Shields. He was appointed a full-time Tribunal Judge in the IAC in 2018. He is Assistant Resident Judge for Glasgow and Belfast; and Deputy Training Judge (IAC), UK.
