About the Seminar:

"The work of an Immigration Lawyer," will provide a review of the various aspects of UK immigration law and professional practice. It will cover

 

  • An exploration and review of the diverse areas of practice within UK immigration Law, including the refugee convention, human rights, family and business migration, nationality law, appeals, and regulatory matters.

 

  • Identification of themes that emerge from immigration law practice, highlighting the challenges encountered by immigration lawyers.

 

  • Insights and experiences from the speaker's perspective after 20 years working in the immigration law field.”

 

 About the Speaker:

Darren Stevenson is a Judge of the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber). He was appointed as a fee-paid immigration judge in 2020, and a full-time immigration judge in 2024.

 

Prior to his appointment to the salaried judicial role, Darren worked as a solicitor in private practice for 15 years, specialising in UK immigration law, and spent 6 years as a civil servant with the UK Border Agency before qualifying as a solicitor.

 

Throughout his career, Darren has handled various complex and novel issues, across the full spectrum of immigration work from refugee claims to high value sponsor licencing disputes.

 

Notable cases that he has been involved in include Basnet (validity of application - respondent) [2012] UKUT 00113 (IAC), The Advocate General for Scotland v. Romein (Scotland) [2018] UKSC 6, and Galbraith Trawlers Ltd v Advocate General [2024] CSIH 1.
