Election of Law Society of Scotland Council Members

There are five vacancies for Law Society of Scotland Council Members for the Glasgow and Strathkelvin constituency and six nominees (please see the summary of candidates in the attached file).

Two of these candidates, Austin Lafferty and Ahsan Mustafa, also have strong ties to the RFPG Council. Below are summaries highlighting their connections and relevant experience.

Austin Lafferty

Note to fellow solicitors and members for RFPG

I am standing in the forthcoming Law Society of Scotland election for Council Member for Glasgow and Strathkelvin. I am one of the longest-serving members having been on Council since 2006. In that time I have been President and Vice President, member of various committees including the Professional Practice Committee where I have been Convener for 9 years. It has been my privilege to support individual lawyers and the profession as a whole. My hope is to secure a further three-year term serving the solicitors of this constituency.

Of course it has also been my privilege to have served our Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow over a number of years on Council and as Dean/Vice Dean. I believe it is essential for RFPG to have a strong link with the Law Society and I would continue to provide that, with good connections in both organisations and the philosophy of mutual support that I try to bring.

The Society has emailed all solicitors eligible to participate, and I simply ask you to ensure you vote. I hope your choice will include me as one of the candidates you favour, but even if not, please ensure you do cast votes as it is crucial for the democratic process in our profession to be active.

Please simply log into your Law Society website user account and find the link to your voting area. If you have any questions for me, please reply to this email.

Ahsan Mustafa

Dear Members of the Faculty,

I hope that this message finds you well.

As many of you know, I am standing as a candidate to represent Glasgow & Strathkelvin on the Council of the Law Society of Scotland.

It was a privilege and honour to previously serve as a Council Member of the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, where I worked closely with many of you and gained a deeper understanding of the issues our profession faces at both a local and national level.

Since then, I have remained committed to advancing the interests of the profession, through extensive committee work, mentoring, legal education and giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament on behalf of the Law Society of Scotland. I would now welcome the opportunity to continue that work on the Society’s Council, representing our interests with energy and integrity. I believe I bring both experience and commitment to this role.

I would be sincerely grateful if you could cast your vote before polls close at 12 noon on Thursday 15th May 2025. I hope that I will be named as one of your preferences, but even if I am not, please participate in the election and support the Law Society of Scotland and make sure our voice is heard.
